Camp Parsons is a recreational summer day camp owned and operated by PWCC for over 50 years. Katharine Parsons, a former Phyllis Wheatley Community Center Board of Directors member, donated the 106-acre lakefront property on Oak Lake, MN in 1956 to Phyllis Wheatley to provide quality camping experiences for inner-city children. Born in Fergus Falls in 1891 (died in 1987), Katharine Parsons was the daughter of Judge William Lorenzo Parsons and Mary Moorhead McLane. She graduated from Smith College in 1913, and in 1920 began working for Cowin & Co., Inc., a steel products firm, where she eventually became part owner and Secretary-Treasurer. She never married and was an extraordinarily successful businesswoman, leaving all her self-made fortune to charitable causes, including Smith College and Phyllis Wheatley. Throughout her life she was prominently active in a variety of civic causes in the Twin Cities area
Located just minutes west of Lake Minnetonka, the camp gives city youth an opportunity to participate in a variety of supervised outdoor activities. Kids participate in nature studies, arts and crafts, outdoor games, music and dance, field trips and cooking. Many activities are designed to introduce youth to world cultures. In addition to increasing campers' knowledge of certain topics, the program fosters growth in self-awareness, self reliance and peer interaction.
The camp operates primarily during the summer and in 2005 was incorporated into the Academic Achievement Program. It has provided quality camping experiences for generations of families and children.
