explore, and connect with one another through activities that strengthen our minds, bodies, spirits,
families, and communities. Our enrichment and community building programs are open to the public and rely heavily on volunteers like you.
Phyllis Wheatley’s DigitalTechWorksTM Academy is our umbrella of programs designed to close the digital gaps that people of color face in and around North Minneapolis while preparing them for the jobs and career paths of tomorrow in fun, educational, and engaging ways.

DigitalTechWorkstm Academy Director
The ManCode™ Mentoring program is a free, virtual (with in-person possibilities), 12-week program for 12- to 17-year-old Black/African American boys. ManCode™ Mentoring is a collaboration of PWCC, Microsoft and the 100 Black Men of Twin Cities supported by Comcast LiftZone and initially funded by Hennepin County. The program has three pillars:
1) life skills
2) professional development
3) career pathways, with an introduction to computer technology, including coding and gaming.
Wheatley eSports Club
eSports players typically have a strong aptitude in STEM subjects and self-learn computers, networking, servers, and game design. Electronic Sports (eSports) are competitive video games. Like traditional sports, eSports can be single player or team based. The competitive aspect builds character through self-improvement, sportsmanship, teamwork, tactical and strategic thinking, and skills. Players and teams have regular practices 2 to 4 times per week and competitions are typically held weekly once the season begins. Matches may be remote, with players competing from their home, local, with players meeting at a local school or facility, or away, requiring transportation to another location. PWCC’s DTWA will be launching a Wheatley eSports Club by mid-May 2021 that will introduce the community to the world of competitive gaming. This group will be geared towards youth between the ages of 12 to 19, and we will be providing Xboxes for game play, and welcome youth to bring their preferred gaming system (if desired). With time, we intend to be able to offer gaming computers to become competitive players in the league.
Girls Who Code™
Girls Who Code™ provides a safe and supportive environment of peers and role models where girls grade 6 th to 12 th learn to see themselves as computer scientists. Girls learn the concepts of loops, variables, conditionals, and functions that form the basis of all programming languages. Participants
work in teams to complete a computer science impact project that solves a real-world problem in our community. The curriculum for this program runs 10 plus weeks, and in addition to providing technical knowledge, also highlights team building and real-life examples of women in tech. This program can be completed in-person and remotely. Program will launch by September 2021.
In partnership with Microsoft Community Skills program, DTWA will provide free fundamentalcertification courses in MS Azure, Security, Compliance, and Identity, Power Platform, and Microsoft 365. These courses are available digitally in a self-paced format, and DTWA will be offer the option of
completing the course independently or in a class-like setting for those wanting more support. DTW will be covering the cost of the certification exams as well. Microsoft donated Surfaces to our program, and these will be utilized for any participant in need of one for this program. This program will be launched in May/June 2021.
