Phyllis Wheatley is Turning 100!
On October 17, 2024, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center will celebrate its 100th year. For a century, our organization has existed to serve Minneapolis' African American people, creating equity, opportunity, and hope for better futures.
Now, as we look to the future, we invite you to join us in celebration of our past and the achievements our legacy organization has made to create a space for African Americans in a city filled with opportunity, but too often, only for some of its citizens.
On April 11, 2025, Phyllis Wheatley will host its centennial gala in celebration of our century of commitment to our community.
Check back here soon for information on sponsorships, support, volunteer opportunities, and updates as we plan for this momentous occasion.
Cheers to 100 years!
1924 - 2024
Phyllis Wheatley Community Center and Minnesota's Black History are deeply intertwined; without the Northside community, Phyllis Wheatley wouldn't exist; without Phyllis Wheatley, the Northside would look drastically different. Members of the African American community of North Minneapolis has — for 10 decades — come to Phyllis Wheatley when in need of assistance, leadership, advocacy, and community. They've has been met with solutions, help, advice, and a sense of belonging.
As we look ahead to the future of North Minneapolis, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center also looks back on its past — the challenges, triumphs, setbacks, and advances in equity for African Americans in a city mired by decades of racist public pplicy and marginalization that reverberates today.
But there's one thing Northside families have and will continue to look to in times of tragedy and of joy, need and abundance — Phyllis Wheatley remains, as it always has, in the heart of the community, ready to pivot its focus, remain flexible with its programming, and be agile in adjusting to meet the most pressing needs of our community, as they arise.
