Phyllis Wheatley's Turning 100!

A legacy of partnership and service

On October 17, 2024, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center (PWCC) will celebrate 100 years of service to the African American community in North Minneapolis. Over the years, the agency has provided basic human services, youth enrichment programming including summer camp experiences, restorative programs for family healing, and advocacy for the underserved, among many other programs and services. To ensure that we're here to meet people where they are and help create a better future for all, PWCC knows it must remain nimble, ready to change our services and programs to address the community's needs as they arise. Our ability to pivot is what ensures Northside families and individuals can continue their march toward equitable access to opportunity, restoration after

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center has a long history of leadership in the advancement of equal rights for African Americans -- from the settlement house movement that birthed it through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and until today, as our clients and neighbors face persistent and ever-evolving adversity in the fight for equity and equality. Yet, amidst the milestones and celebrations of big wins, there lingers a profound sense of urgency — a recognition that our work is far from finished. The road ahead is fraught with challenges, injustices waiting to be confronted, and inequalities waiting to be addressed. But it is in these moments of adversity that our resolve is strengthened, our commitment reaffirmed.

A future informed by leadership of the past, in partnership with those we serve today

As we gaze into the future, we do so with unwavering determination—to confront the injustices that still plague our community, to break down the barriers that still stand in the way of progress, and to create a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Together, we stand on the precipice of change, united in our belief that a better tomorrow is not just possible, but inevitable. With hearts full of hope and hands joined in solidarity, we embark on this next chapter of our journey—a journey fueled by love, guided by compassion, and driven by the unwavering belief that together, we can build a brighter, more equitable future for all.

A community that refuses to give up

Together with the Northside community, PWCC is proud of the advancements that have taken place and remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate those barriers that remain. Together with our community, we fight for equity of opportunity, education, and experience, and will continue to fight until these basic rights are the norm for all people in our city.

A celebration of community, history, and what is yet to come

To celebrate the organization’s legacy and those who took part in creating it, we’re planning a fundraising gala on Saturday, November 9. Looking ahead, as we move into our second century of partnership and stewardship to the Northside community, we have much to look back upon, with pride, and with determination – to bring about the changes that have not yet occurred, and to create pathways to success for all who come through our doors. By empowering individuals, we are creating systemic change and lifting the voices of the unheard, creating space in society for the marginalized, and building a stronger Minneapolis, with foundations rooted in inclusion, and the principle of equality leading the charge.

Our Mission:
We create pathways for individuals to discover their strengths and take control of their futures.
