In our journey to meeting the mission of Phyllis Wheatley Community Center — to create pathways for individuals to discover their strengths and take control of their futures — we rely on many. Our funders believe in our mission; more importantly, they believe in us and our ability to execute that mission, as we have done for a century.
Our North Minneapolis community has, since Phyllis Wheatley Community Center came to be, faced adversity and disadvantage. Historic public policies had the effect of marginalization and segregation, and in a city thriving with opportunity for most, the African American population in Minneapolis was largely left out of the chance for prosperity and success, and still today, echoes of the impact of poor decisions made decades ago continue to reverberate.
Our funders are committed to using their resources to make long-needed changes that we work to institute for our community, and without their enduring belief in our ability to meet our mission and their consistent, persistent support, we would not be able to continue our work — of creating equity and equality for the people of North Minneapolis, and helping to change the systemic issues that plague us, one individual, one family, one community at a time.
